Three things to think about before installing a heat pump

Buying advice

If you’re thinking of installing an air source heat pump in your home, there are three main things to think about. We outline them here and explain what you need to do.

1. You need space outside

The first thing you must consider is whether you have space outside. You don’t actually need a huge amount of outside space to install a heat pump. Take a look at the diagram below to see just how little you need:

Consider your neighbours too – there is a minimum requirement to be XXm away from the edge of your property. Whilst heat pumps are getting quieter and quieter, you don’t want to annoy your neighbours by putting it right outside their window.

2. You need space inside your home

Don’t worry, you don’t need much but you will need enough space to store hot water and other elements of the system – heat pumps can’t provide instantaneous hot water like combi boilers, for example. An airing cupboard or equivalent space is ideal.

3. The more energy efficient your home is, the better

The final thing you need to consider is the level of insulation in your home. This will ensure all that lovely heat from your heat pump stays inside and doesn’t escape! The better insulated your home, the more efficient your heat pump will work and/or the smaller it will need to be.

Don’t worry though if you’re unsure about these three things, we’re here to help! At Thermly, we will do an initial check to establish whether your home is heat pump ready and provide you with guidance if it isn’t. Where we can and if appropriate, we can signpost you to local insulation schemes to get that work done too. If you proceed to have a heat pump, our super network of local, trusted, certified installers will then look at the detailed technical requirements when they survey your home to provide a detailed quotation.
