How does a heat pump work?

Guide

Heat pumps help us do our bit for the climate as they are an energy efficient, low carbon way to heat your home.

They are suitable for almost all types of home. And they could save you money on your energy bills. Result!

Heat pumps are super clever. They use small amounts of electricity, moving energy that’s already in the air or ground into your home, which reduces your energy usage.

This technology is very similar to that found in your fridge freezer, but works in reverse. In an air source heat pump, the system draws in air from outside (which contains energy in the form of heat) and compresses it to further raise its temperature. The heat pump then moves all that lovely warm heat into your home.

While it uses electricity to do this, the heat energy it generates is much greater than the electrical energy that is needed to run the system. Heat pumps are three to five times more efficient than a gas boiler - genius! They also eliminate our reliance on gas or oil or other fossil fuels, lowering our carbon emissions too.

The tech behind heat pumps has actually been around for decades, making them a tried and tested way to heat your home in an energy efficient way. And when it comes to maintenance, heat pumps don’t need any more looking after than a gas boiler. An annual service should be enough.

Is my home heat pump ready?

So now you know how heat pumps work, how do you know if your home is heat pump ready? Well, if you have a home and a desire to lower your energy usage, you’re halfway there.

People mistakenly believe that head pumps are big and take up a lot of space. In fact, heat pumps need less space than two wheelie bins standing side-by-side.

You will also need to identify space for a hot water cylinder – an airing cupboard is ideal.

Heat pumps can work in all types of homes, but the more energy efficient your property, the more efficiently your heat pump can operate. However, you don’t need to worry about this. We check whether your home is heat pump ready.
